About
Michelle Collado (b. 2000) is a Dominican-descent multidisciplinary artist. She received her BFA at the Rhode Island School of Design and specializes in oil painting with a practice in filmmaking, photography and animation.
Through figurative oil paintings Collado aims to highlight the lives of people within the African and Latinx Diaspora as a means to archive their stories and immortalize them, in highlighting the subtle acts of resistance and the paralyzing effects of capitalism. By featuring her community members’ labor, love, and loss, she constructs forms of cultural preservation through the lens of a Dominican American woman. By painting, she's bringing attention to these moments and allowing the viewer to spend time to truly observe nuanced modes of agency and adaptation within marginalized communities. Consistently, she strives to reveal truths of cultural nuances, interrogate racial narratives and preserve memory through her paintings, examining how the body interacts with its environment, audience, and viewer. Since graduating she has exhibited in many group and duo shows including Are We There Yet? at MassArt, and Mary Schein Fall Salon at the Cambridge Art Association. Michelle is also a recent Institute Recruitment of Teachers 2025-2026 fellow.
