Michelle Collado
About
Michelle Collado is a first-generation Dominican multidisciplinary artist born and raised in Lawrence, Massachusetts. She received her B.F.A. in Film/Animation/Video at the Rhode Island School of Design. She specializes in oil painting but also makes work as a filmmaker, muralist and stop motion animator.
Her work explores themes of Identity, mental health and social justice while centering the lives of Black, Indigenous and People of Color. In her work, she emphasizes the interconnectedness of people by creating a visual language to portray their experiences or emotions. She also illustrates experiences of people who have gone through struggles specific to those from marginalized communities. The political climate and her relationship with her immediate environment play a significant role in her art making process. She believes in the importance of building community which led her to gravitate to depicting people as her subjects.
